Scince Test 2 Flashcards
Mouth
The mouth digests food with amylose which is an enzyme that turns food into maltose
Teeth
INCISORS: cut into food
CANINES: grip/tear food
PREMOLARS AND MOLARS: grind/crush food
Oesophagus
Is a muscular pipe that pushes down food to the stomach by peristalsis
Stomach
Is a muscular bag that churns food and adds Hydrochloric Acid (HCI) to kill bacteria
Small intestine
Long narrow tube
It digest food by enzymes and bile
It also takes all the nutrients out of the small intestine
Large intestine
Is shorter but wider
It reabsorbs water it leaves a semi solid faeces which starts in the rectum and it is egested through the anus
Liver
Makes bile to break down fats
Pancras
Makes enzymes which chemically digests food in the small intestine
Name the 5 steps in the food path
Ingestion
Digestion
Absorption
Assimilation
Egestion
What are the 3 main reasons we need food
To give us energy, to provide the raw materials for growth and to allow us to repair the body
Define the term chemical digestion
Chemical digestion is the breakdown of food using enzymes (or hydrochloric acid in the stomach).
Define the term enzyme
An enzyme is a chemical (made of protein) produced by the body that speeds up chemical reactions in the body without the enzyme being used up.
