Energy Flashcards
Name the eight different forms of energy
Kinetic energy, potential energy, sound energy, heat energy, chemical energy, electrical energy, solar and nuclear energy
Define the term energy
Energy is the ability to do work
What is the unit used to measure energy?
Joule
What is a principle of conservation of energy?
Energy is neither create destroyed but can be converted from one form to another
What is the meaning of energy dissipation?
Energy dissipation is an energy changes from a useful form to a not so useful form
What does a sankey diagram show?
It shows the flow of energy to and from a device
What is work?
The ability to transfer energy from one object to another
What are two types of potential energy?
Gravitational potential energy and elastic potential energy
What is kinetic energy
Kinetic energy: energy that a body has because it is moving - for example a ball rolling along the ground
What is potential energy
Potential energy: energy that a body has because of its position relative to other bodies - for example a stationary object raised above ground level; changing the shape of an object can also involve potential energy - for example when you bend a ruler
What is sound energy
Sound energy: energy that is produced by a vibration - for example the sound produced by a guitar string vibrating after it is plucked
What is heat energy
Heat energy: energy that travels between a hot object and a cool object - for example when a spoon is placed in hot tea, heat travels from the tea to your fingers along the spoon
What is chemical energy
Chemical energy: energy that is stored in food is a good example of chemical energy
What is electrical energy
Electrical energy: energy that comes from the flow of electric charge - for example, electric current flowing along a copper wire
What is solar energy
Solar energy: energy that comes from the Sun
What is nuclear energy
Nuclear energy: energy produced from nuclear reactions - for example nuclear fission or nuclear fusion.
