Chapter 41 Flashcards
Define the term climate change
Climate change is any long-term change, usually in terms of decades, to Earth’s climate.
Define the term, global warming
Global warming is the increase in Earth’s average surface temperature due to the effect of greenhouse gases.
What is the carbon footprint
A carbon footprint is a measure of the amount of carbon that is produced from the activities carried out by humans.
List 5 things that are effecting climate change
• Rising sea levels
• Storms and floods
• Drought.
• Shrinking glaciers
• Heatwaves
Name 6 ways that humans release carbon dioxide
• Burning fossil fuels
• Production of lime to make cement
• Extraction (removal), processing, transport and distribution of fossil fuels
• Disposal of all household waste
• Addition of fertiliser onto the soil
• Agriculture
Name 3 natural activities that releas carbon dioxide
• Animal and plant respiration
• Volcanic eruptions
• Carbon dioxide exchange between the oceans and the atmosphere.
What is the greenhouse effect
The greenhouse effect occurs when gases in Earth’s atmosphere prevent some of the heat from escaping into space.
Name the 4 main greenhouse gases
• Carbon dioxide (CO,)
• Methane (CHA)
• Nitrous oxide (N,°)
• Water vapour (H,O).
