Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Flashcards
What is the Capsular Pattern of the TMJ?
- Limitation of mouth opening
- Deviation to the painful side
Normal ROM for Mouth Opening?
35-55 mm
Muscles associated with Opening? (depression of the mandible)
LALALALA
- Lateral Pterygoid
Muscles associated with closing of the mouth?
“MMT”
- Medial Pterygoid
- Masseter
- Temporalis
Muscles associated with Protrusion of the Mandible?
P for Protrusion and Pterygoids
- Medial and Lateral Pterygoids
Muscles associated with Retraction of the Mandible?
Temporalis
Muscles associated with Lateral Deviation of the Mandible?
Contralateral:
- Medial and Lateral Pterygoids
Ipsilateral:
- Temporalis
- Masseter
Key things to note with Disc Displacement with Reduction?
“Pops” or “Clicks” with opening and closing
What are the clicks/popping associated with opening or closing?
Opening:
- Reduction of the Disk
Closing:
- Disk displacing anteriorly
Key things to note with Disc Displacement without Reduction?
- Intermittent locking without joint noises
- Limitation of mouth opening (20-25 mm)
- Deviation of mandible towards involved side
How differentiate TMJ hypomobility and general hypomobility
General hypomobility:
- Complaints of decreased ROM
- NO complaints of pain
Similarities and differences seen between capsulitis and synovitis?
Similarities:
- Reports of Pain
Differences:
- Synovitis: No mandible deviation
- Capsulitis: See Deviation of the Mandible towards painful side
HYPO vs Hypermobility Deviation Differences?
Hyper:
- Deviation towards OPP side
Hypo:
- Deviation towards SAME side
