Scoliosis Flashcards
How is a curve pattern designated?
According to the level of the apex of the curve
For a right thoracic curve where is the convexity and apex?
Convexity is towards the right, apex of the curve in the thoracic spine
For a cervicothoracic curve what levels is the apex?
C7 or T1
What levels is the apex in a thoracic curve?
Between T2 and T11
What level is the apex in a thoracolumbar curve?
T12 or L1
What level is the apex in a lumbar curve?
Between L2 and L4
What level is the apex in a lumbosacral scoliosis?
L5 or S1
In structural scoliosis what direction do the vertebral bodies rotate towards?
Rotates Towards the Convex Side (convexity of the curve)
If the thoracic spine is involved what deformity may be caused?
Rotation causes the ribs on the convex side to push posterior, forming a rib hump.
What direction do the spinous processes deviate?
Spinous process deviates toward the concave side
- Away from the convexity
What direction do the ribs move on the concave side?
Move more anteriorly, forming a hollow space on the concave side
Anterior Rib Hump
On the Side with the Convexity, what muscular adaptation occurs?
Muscles are Lengthened/Stretched
On the Side with the Concavity, what muscular adaptation occurs?
Muscles are Shortened/Tightened
What adaptation occurs at the hip of the Concave side?
High Pelvis
What adaptation to vertebral height and intercostal spaces occurs on the Concave Side?
- Decrease in the Vertebral Height
- Narrowing of the Intercostal Spaces
