What causes Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS)
Due to abnormal tracking between the patella and femoral condyles.
What direction is the Patella most inappropriately tracked in?
Patella pulled too far laterally during knee extension.
Are female or males more affected?
Females
Most common patient history provided for PFPS
Patients reports gradual onset of anterior knee pain following an increase in physical activity.
Where is pain typically felt?
Pain felt behind the knee (retropatellar pain)
What positions or activities increase PFPS?
Stair climbing. squating, jumping
Prolonged static positions (sitting with knee flexed to 90 degrees; sitting in car, plane theatre)
What other condition may this be interrelated with?
Chondromalacia
What special tests can be used to confirm diagnosis?
Clarke’s Sign
What is normal Q angle for males and females?
Males = 13 degrees
Females = 18 degrees
How is Q angle associated with the prevalence of PFPS?
Patients with PFPS tend to have a larger Q angle. Cough Cough Females .
What patellar glide direction is most beneficial?
Medial glides, to increase the flexibility of the lateral fascia
What activity should be avoided when exercising with this patient?
Deep squats as this can aggravate patients condition
