Common MOI of Meniscal Tear? (Active patients)
Traumatic Injury; twisting of the knee in the semiflexed position with the foot planted on the ground.
Which meniscus is more affected? Medial or Lateral
Medial, secondary to it being more firmly attached to the knee
Most likely contributing factor for the development of meniscal tears? (Sports movements and old bitches)
Those involved in sports that involve quick cutting and pivoting.
Degenerative tears in older adults; secondary to thinning of the meniscus
Clinical Presentation: (Visual)
Joint line pain and tenderness
Swelling and loss of ROM
Clinical Presentation: (Verbal)
Complaints of catching or locking
Feelings of instability
Onset difference Traumatic vs Degenerative
Traumatic: immediate onset
Degenerative: gradual onset
Special tests used to confirm diagnosis?
McMurray
Apley Compression Test
Thessaly Test
What portion of the meniscus is most likely to heal?
Outer 1/3 of the meniscus as this portion is most vascular.
Peripheral 1/3
