Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Overview
A
- Chronic autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation of connective tissue
- Has relapses, flares, and remissions
- Females > males
- Any age, peak onset between 20-40 years old
- Cause is unknown

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Symptoms
A
- Most common symptoms = Fever, malaise, fatigue, weight loss, butterfly rash, skin rashes, joint pain and swelling, arthritis, hair loss, and sores
Other symptoms:
- Pulmonary issues (dyspnea, chest pain, cough)
- Anemia
- Kidney involvement
- Raynauds
- CNS involvement (seizures, HA, neuropathy, memory loss, cognitive or vision issues)
- Numbness, tingling
- Heart problems

A
- Goal is to prevent organ damage and achieve remission
- Avoid direct sun exposure
- Dietary recommendations
- Stress reduction
- Good sleep
- Exercise
- Emotional support
- Patient education

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus PT Management
A
- Exercise to decrease weakness and increase muscle endurance
- Education for pts with skin lesions
- Aerobic exercise to decrease fatigue levels (30-50mins, 3x/week)
- ROM and muscle strengthening can increase energy level, cardiovascular fitness, functional status, and strength
- Energy conservation
- Be aware of signs and symptoms that suggest progression including those associated with avascular necrosis, kidney involvement, and/or neuropathy involvement
