SIJ Dysfunction Overview

A
  • Caused by abnormal motion
  • Main function within this joint is to provide shock absorption for spine and transmit forces between upper and lower body
  • This joint experiences shearing, torsion, rotation, and tension
  • Only joint connecting upper and lower body
  • Relatively stiff synovial joint filled with synovial fluid

A
  • Repetitive microtrauma or acute trauma
  • Pregnancy related
  • Idiopathic

SIJ Dysfunction Symptoms

A
  • LBP
  • Pain localized over buttock
  • Sharp, stabbing, and/or shooting pain which extends down posterior thigh (not past knee)
  • Difficulty sitting in one place too long d/t pain
  • Local tenderness near PSIS
  • Pain occurs when joint is stressed (forward bending)
  • Pain while sitting down, lying on ipsilateral side of pain, or climbing stairs

  • Strengthen core muscles and gluts
  • Ice
  • Anti-inflammatories
  • Manual Therapy — SIJ Manipulation
  • Stabilization — pelvic belt or sacroiliac binder
