SIJ Dysfunction Overview
A
- Caused by abnormal motion
- Main function within this joint is to provide shock absorption for spine and transmit forces between upper and lower body
- This joint experiences shearing, torsion, rotation, and tension
- Only joint connecting upper and lower body
- Relatively stiff synovial joint filled with synovial fluid

A
- Repetitive microtrauma or acute trauma
- Pregnancy related
- Idiopathic

SIJ Dysfunction Symptoms
A
- LBP
- Pain localized over buttock
- Sharp, stabbing, and/or shooting pain which extends down posterior thigh (not past knee)
- Difficulty sitting in one place too long d/t pain
- Local tenderness near PSIS
- Pain occurs when joint is stressed (forward bending)
- Pain while sitting down, lying on ipsilateral side of pain, or climbing stairs

- Distraction

- Thigh Thrust
- Sacral Thrust

- Strengthen core muscles and gluts
- Ice
- Anti-inflammatories
- Manual Therapy — SIJ Manipulation
- Stabilization — pelvic belt or sacroiliac binder
