Q
Hematocrit
A
- Measures percentage of RBCs in blood
- Low hematocrit = anemia, blood loss, bone marrow disorder
- High hematocrit = polycythemia (high hematocrit), dehydration, certain cancers
- Normal for males = 41-50%
- Normal for females = 35-44%
6
Q
Hemoglobin
A
- Protein found in RBCs that carries O2 throughout body
- Helps to maintain adequate O2 levels to tissues and organs and removes CO2 from body
- Normal for males = 13.5-17.5 g/dL
- Normal for females = 12-15 g/dL
- Low hemoglobin (anemia) = fatigue, weakness, pale skin, SOB
- High hemoglobin (polycythemia) = HA, dizziness, thick blood, and increased risk of blood clots
7
Q
Prothrombin Time
A
- Prothrombin is a protein produced by the liver
- Checks how quickly blood is clotting
- Monitored if patient is taking blood thinning med (warfarin), sometimes ordered before surgery, or check for liver disease
- Measured in seconds = average time is 10-13 seconds
- Measured as an INR = 1.1 0r below is normal for people without health conditions, while 2.0-3.0 is effective range for people taking blood thinner (warfarin)
