Cold vs Heat Treatment Flashcards
1
Q
Heat Treatment
A
- Used after initial swelling has subsided (after 48-72 hours), chronic pain, muscle stiffness, and spasms
- Dilates blood vessels, increases blood flow to the area, relaxes muscles, reduces stiffness, and promotes healing
- Increases blood flow and nutrient delivery, relaxes muscles and reduces stiffness, and can help relieve chronic pain
2
Q
Cold Treatment
A
- Used for first 72 hours after an injury, or when dealing with acute inflammation, swelling, or pain
- Constricts blood vessels, reduces blood flow to injured area, which minimizes swelling and pain
- Reduces swelling and inflammation, numbs pain, reduces nerve activity, and can help minimize muscle spasms
