Spinal Stenosis / Neurogenic Claudication Flashcards
1
Q
Spinal Stenosis / Neurogenic Claudication Overview
A
- Arterial Insufficiency to tissues
- Most evident when activity occurs because of increased vascular demand on tissues
2
Q
Spinal Stenosis / Neurogenic Claudication Types
A
- Neurogenic = associated with spinal stenosis, symptoms manifested in back or sciatic nerve distribution, sometimes called pseudo claudication or cauda equina syndrome
- Vascular = common result of arteriosclerosis, arterial embolism, or thrombo-angitis

Q
Bicycle Test of Van Gelderen
A
- Patient seated on exercise bike and asked to peddle against resistance
- Patient started pedaling while leaning backward (if pain to butt and post thigh and tingling in affected LE then this part is +)
- Patient then asked to lean forward while continuing to pedal (if pain subsides over short period of time then test is +)
- If patient sits upright again, pain returns
- This test determines whether patient has neurogenic intermittent claudication
