Glucocorticoids Purpose

A
  • Decrease inflammation by inhibiting release of pro-inflammatory molecules
  • Starts in hypothalamus and sends negative feedback to anterior pituitary gland (which releases cortisol)
  • Examples — cortisone, prednisone, triamicinolne, budesonide, dexamethasone

A
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Inflammatory and autoimmune conditions (OA, RA, asthma, arthritis, allergies, etc)
  • Other conditions such as MS and cancer

Glucocorticoids Side Effects

A
  • Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) suppression — cortisol has inhibiting effect on ACTH which can lead to cushings (hypertension and hyperglycemia)
  • Weight gain and muscle weakness
  • Osteoporosis (prednisone)
  • Hypercortisolism (cushings)
  • Mood changes
  • Effects patients with diabetes
