Glucocorticoids Flashcards
1
Q
Glucocorticoids Purpose
A
- Decrease inflammation by inhibiting release of pro-inflammatory molecules
- Starts in hypothalamus and sends negative feedback to anterior pituitary gland (which releases cortisol)
- Examples — cortisone, prednisone, triamicinolne, budesonide, dexamethasone
2
Q
Glucocorticoids Indications
A
- Hormone replacement therapy
- Inflammatory and autoimmune conditions (OA, RA, asthma, arthritis, allergies, etc)
- Other conditions such as MS and cancer

Q
Glucocorticoids Side Effects
A
- Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) suppression — cortisol has inhibiting effect on ACTH which can lead to cushings (hypertension and hyperglycemia)
- Weight gain and muscle weakness
- Osteoporosis (prednisone)
- Hypercortisolism (cushings)
- Mood changes
- Effects patients with diabetes
