Pagets Disease Definition

A
  • Metabolic bone disease caused by increased bone resorption followed by excessive unrestricted bone formation, due to activated osteoclasts
  • This leads to bone instability which can lead to fractures, arthritis, deformities, and pain
  • Second most common metabolic bone disease to osteoporosis

Pagets Disease Cause

A
  • Unknown (thought to be slow, viral bone infection due to risk factors include a gene-environment interaction)
  • Seen in individuals older than 50 years
  • Males = females
  • Prognosis is good, especially if treated early (there is no cure but disorder can be controlled from progressing)

  • Abnormally large skull
  • Jaw deformity
  • Loss of hearing
