What is the mainstay of management of sunburn?
Prevention is better than treatment.
How should sunscreen be applied?
- Use an SPF 50+ broad-spectrum, water resistant sunscreen
- Apply liberally to clean, dry skin 30 mins before going outside
- Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, more often if swimming or playing sport
How should sunburn be treated over-the-counter?
- Simple Analgesia for pain i.e., Paracetamol
- Cold running water (shower) for 20 minute intervals
- Cold compresses
- Rehydrate
- Gentle, non-fragranced moisturisers on intact skin to decrease loss of water
- Apply Solosite regularly to prevent burn drying out.

How does sunburn present initially?
Sunburnt skin will change colour within 2 to 6 hours of being burnt and the colour change will continue to develop for up to 72 hours.
