A
- Always refer for a COVID test
- Duration of more than 2 weeks
- Signs of bacterial infection (i.e., marked tonsillar exudate accompanied with a high temp. and swollen glands)
- Hoarseness >3 weeks
- Difficulty swallowing
- Recurrent bouts of infection
- Associated skin rash
- Adverse drug reaction (for example, clozapine, sulfasalazine, drugs causing agranulocytosis, inhaled corticosteroids)

What are the directions for paracetamol in sore throats?
A
15mg/kg (to a maximum of 1g) every 4 to 6 hours when required. Maximum of FOUR doses (up to 4g) in 24 hours.

What are 3 non-preferred options for sore throats and why?
A
- Benzocaine 4mg/mL (Cepacaine) Mouthwash: increases the risk of burns if eating/drinking hot food/drink afterwards
- Strepsils SUGAR FREE Medicated Lozenges (Dichlorobenzyl Alcohol and Amylmetacresol): anti-inflammatory (more risks) and sugar content (diabetics)
- Povidone iodine gargle (Betadine Ready-to-Use): unsafe in pregnancy and breastfeeding
