Apply to the affected area(s) once or twice daily. Begin treatment with lower strengths (2.5 or 5%) then change to 10% after 3-4 weeks if tolerated and acne is resistant
What are 3 non-preferred options for acne and why?
- Azelaic acid: safety in pregnancy unknown
- Benzac wash: harder to titrate and keep to affected areas
- Differin 0.1% gel (Adapalene): Pregnancy Category D

What are 10 pieces of non-pharmacological advice for acne?
- Usually gets worse before it gets better
- Gradual improvement over time with treatment, usually within 8 to 12 weeks after beginning therapy.
- Ensure a good face wash/skin care routine
- Use a moisturiser to reduce dryness
- Avoid using toner
- Avoid squeezing or picking the lesions
- Avoid waxing treated areas
- Avoid wearing heavy oil-based makeup and clean makeup off thoroughly each night
- Important to wear sunscreen
- Exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet with lots of fresh food and water.
