Q

Describe a limitation in the mechanism of action of glucagon.

A

The efficacy of glucagon depends on the availability of hepatic glycogen. Glucagon will have little or no effect if the patient is fasting or has adrenaline insufficiency, chronic hypoglycaemia or alcohol-induced hypoglycaemia.

Q

What should be done when giving glucagon to a patient taking indometacin?

A

Indometacin may antagonise the effects of glucagon and may cause hypoglycaemia. Monitor for efficacy and signs of worsening hypoglycaemia.

16
Q

If a patient fails to respond to glucagon after 6 minutes, what should be done?

A

They should be given IV glucose if available. If not, after 20 minutes, the dose of glucagon can be repeated.

17
Q

After giving a patient glucagon, what should be done once they are conscious?

A

Encourage the patient to consume a fast-acting carbohydrate followed by a longer-acting carbohydrate.

18
Q

How should BGLs be monitored after using glucagon?

A

Monitor BGLs after 15 minutes, then every 1 to 2 hours for 4 hours, then return to normal testing.

19
Q

What should you advise all patients who have a hypoglycaemic episode do?

A

Follow up with their doctor as soon as possible.
