- All other lubricant eye drops: more irritant preservatives
- Lubricant gels/ointments: blur vision

What are 11 pieces of non-pharmacological advice for dry eyes?
- Blink more frequently
- Avoid aggravating conditions (for example, wind, air-conditioning)
- Increase humidity of the area by using a humidifier or a bowl of water
- Wear eye protection when swimming or working with machines and chemicals
- Do not rub your eyes
- Avoid blowing air in your eyes (for example, hair dryers, fans, car heaters)
- Blink more often to relieve dryness
- Take regular breaks when reading or using a computer
- Use good lighting when reading
- Avoid smoke (for example, cigarette smoke)
- Reduce use of contact lenses and wearing of glasses
Describe the comparative information about lubricant eye drops
There is no evidence that any lubricant is superior to another however, the presence of preservative is important
Describe the relationship between contact lenses and lubricant eye drops
Wearing soft contact lenses are not recommended when using eyedrops that contains preservatives. They may be removed before instilling drops and reinserted 15 minutes later.

Contact lenses should not be worn if using eye ointment or if there is a current eye infection
Why is it important to consider the preservatives in lubricating eye drops?
In dry eyes (especially the elderly), tear secretion is decreased and can therefore lead to an accumulation of preservatives in the eye and can potentially damage the cornea and conjunctiva
