Suboccipital triangle Flashcards
Alanto-occipital joint
-articulating surfaces
-movement
- superior articular surfaces of atlas and occipital condyles
- head nod on vertebral column
Atlanto-axial joint
-articulating surfaces
-ligaments
-movement
- anterior arch of atlas and dens (odontoid process of axis)
- Transverse: holds dens in place
-alar: runs from dens to occipital bones (wings) - head rotation
Suboccipital muscles
-innervated by posterior ramus (dorsal rami) of C1 or subocciptial nerve
1. rectus capitis posterior minor
2. rectus capitis posterior major
3. obliquus capitis superior
4. obliquus capitis inferior
Suboccipital triangle

Contents:
-suboccipital nerve
-vertebral artery
what does the vertebral artery supply and where does it run through
-travels from the thorax through the transverse foramen of the cervical vertebra through the foramen magnum
-supplies the posterior region of the brain
