Knee joint Flashcards
Knee joint articulations
-femoral condyles with tibial plateaus
-patellar surface of femur with patella
What supports the joint anterior laterally?
IT band reinforces the capsule
What reinforces the joint capsule anterior medially
MCL
What reinforces the joint posteriorly
oblique popliteal ligament
what reinforces the joint posterior medially
extension of the semi membranosus
what reinforces the joint lateral (posteriorly)
LCL
-not attached to capsule there is a hole that a the popliteal muscle can go through
Synovial membrane of the knee
-attches to the edges of articular surfaces and to outer margins of mensci
-does not enclose the ACL/PCL
-also an infra patellar fat pad
Patella ligament
attaches patella to tibial tuberosity
-exerts forces from quads to the tibia
Tibial Collateraal ligament (MCL)
attaches medial femoral epicondyle to medial tibia
-extension of joint capsule and reinforces it
ACL
-Anterior intercondylar area of tibia to posterior lateral condyle of femur (APEX)
-poor blood supply
-knee flexed: slack
-knee extended: taut
PCL
-Posterior intercondylar area to tibia to anterior medial condyle of femur
-knee flexed: taut
-knee extended: slack
-PAIN: posterior to anterior runs internally
Fibular collateral ligament
runs from lateral epicondyle to fibular head
Menisci of the knee
-crescent shaped fibrocartilage
-thicker at external margins and wedge shaped
-found on tibial plateaus
Medial meniscus (shape and what attaches to it)
-c shaped
-attached to tibial collateral ligament and capsule
Lateral meniscus
-nearly circular
-more moveable tan medial (not on capsule)
-separated from fibular collateral ligament by popliteus tendon
