Axilla and brachial plexus Flashcards
What does the axillary sheath contain
axillary artery
axillary vein
brachial plexus
what makes up the anterior wall of the axillary
pectoralis major
pectoralis minor
clavipectoral fascia (present in the anterior thoracic wall)
subclavius
what makes up the medial axillary wall
thoracic wall
serrates anterior
what makes up the lateral axillary wall
intertubecular sulcus of the humerus
what makes up the posterior wall of the axillary
subscapularis
teres major
latissimus dorsi
long head of triceps brachii
What are the roots of the brachial plexus
where do they originate
where do they go through?
ventral rami of C5-T1 that originates in the neck
The roots pass between anterior scalene and middle scalene
The roots are located superior and posterior to subclavian artery
what is the interscalene triangle
brachial plexus and subclavian artery pass between anterior scalene and middle scalene
What are the trunks of the brachial plexus
and where are they located
The trunks are located superior to clavicle
1. superior trunk: comes from roots C5, C6
- Middle trunk: comes from root C7
- Inferior trunk: comes from C8, T1
What are the divisions of the brachial plexus
They are located under the clavicle
1. Superior anterior division (comes from the superior trunk-C5,C6)
2. Superior posterior division (comes from the superior trunk - C5, C6)
3. Middle anterior division (comes from the middle trunk (C7)
4. Middle posterior division (comes from the middle trunk -C7)
5. inferior anterior division (comes from the inferior trunk - C8,T1)
6. inferior posterior division (comes from the inferior trunk - C8, T1)
What are the cords of the brachial plexus
lateral cord
posterior cord
medial cord
named in reference to axially artery
What makes up the lateral cord of the brachial plexus
Superior anterior division (Superior trunk - C5, C6)
and the
Middle anterior division (middle trunk - C7)
What makes up the posterior cord of the brachial plexus
Superior posterior division (superior trunk -C5, C6)
Middle posterior division (middle trunk -C7)
Inferior posterior division (inferior trunk - C8, T1)
What makes up the medial cord of the brachial plexus
Inferior anterior division (inferior Trunk - C8, T1)
What nerves go from the lateral cord
- lateral pectoral nerve
- musculocutaneous
- Part of median
What nerves come from the posterior cord
- upper subscapular
- lower sub scapular
- thoracodorsal
- axillary
- radial
