Q

What is superficial fascia

A

‘Loose’ Connective tissue
-Varies in thickness + distribution
-Provides most of fat storage

Collagen & elastic fibres
-Form 3D meshwork of dense irregular connective tissue

Q

What is deep fascia

A

Dense organised connective tissue
-Varies in thickness

Devoid (free from) adipose tissue

Q

Where is fascia found

A

Throughout the body,
even though its described as discontinuous the distinct layers are connected

Q

Where is deep fascia found

A

Deep to superficial fascia (Just not in face)

Extends from internal surfaces to wrap around skeletal muscles or neurovascular bundles = INVESTING FASCIA

In limbs forms thick sheets separating muscles into 2 compartments= INTERMUSCULAR FASCIA

Q

What is fascia active in

A

Thermoregulation
Protective padding
Support for tissues / organs
Reduces friction between tendons
Transmits mechanical force
Proprioceptive feedback
- Body mechanics to CN
Myofascial system
- Muscle tissue & connective tissue
working together

Q

What is compartment syndrome

A

Deep fascia creates enclosed compartments so with swelling and fluid build up
-Pressure increases in compartment
-Affects muscles + nerve function

Q

Where does infection spread in fascia

A

Within fascial compartments, or in between fascial compartments

although deep fascia can prevent this spread as thick facial planes

Q

What musculoskeletal conditions arise due to fascia

A

Plantar Fasciitis of foot

Fascial Fibrosis of hand
-Fascial thickening & deposition

Myofascial pain syndrome
-Chronic or acute
-Pain originates from muscle & surrounding fascia, has trigger points of radiating pain
