What is stress?
A state of mental or emotional stain or feeling under a lot of pressure in a situation
What are some causes of stress (5)
1) Competition

What are the 2 different types of stress?
Eustress = Good form of stress
Distress = Bad form of stress
What are the main cognitive stress management techniques? (7)
1) Positive thinking / self talk
2) Negative thought blocking
3) Rational thinking
4) Mental rehearsal
5) Imagery
6) Goal setting
7) Mindfulness
What are cognitive stress management techniques?
Used to calm the athletes senses and focus on the mind to reduce psychological effects of stress -> often reduces physiological effects of stress aswell
What is positive thinking / self talk?
Used by athletes to motivate and get them psychologically ready to perform at their best and win
What is negative thought stopping?
The ability to recognise negative thoughts and not allowing yourself to continue using them
What is imagery?
Using images which help you feel calm and focused
What is mental rehearsal?
Forming a mental picture of the skill and taking yourself through the motion of that skill in your mind to improve confidence
What is mindfulness?
Calming and focusing the mind to be in the moment
What is rational thinking?
Where the athlete considers how much preparation they have done to get to this point and emphasise that they are ready to perform
What is goal setting?
Used to help a performer feel more success and therefore motivation
What are the main somatic stress management techniques? (5)
1) Relaxation
2) Progressive muscular relaxation
3) Centring
4) Breathing control
5) Biofeedback
What are somatic stress management techniques
Aimed at calming or understanding the physiological response to stress
What is relaxation
Help performers to be calm and more positive using strategies such as imagery or mindfulness which can have both a cognitive and somatic effect
What is progressive muscular relaxation
Aims to focus the athlete on feelings of tension and release within the muscles
What is centring?
Focusing the mind to the centre of the body
What is breathing control?
Engaging the parasympathetic nervous system and get more oxygen into the body
What is biofeedback
Using different kinds of equipment to gather physiological data eg. Heart rate
