Confidence Flashcards
What is sport confidence?
The belief or degree of certainty individuals possess about their ability to be successful in sport
Eg. A player with high SC will believe they will score from the penalty spot
What is self efficacy?
The self confidence we have in specific situations
Eg. Some of us are more confident than others in situations such as standing up and speaking in front of others
What is self esteem?
The feeling of self worth that determines how valuable and competent we feel
Impact of high sports confidence on performance (3)
1) More likely to achieve positive outcomes in sport
2) You will be more skilful, successful, competitive and more likely to take risks
3) Eg. More likely to try new tactics in a set play
Impact of low sports confidence on performance (3)
1) Negative effect on performance
2) Can cause underachievement
3) Eg. Missing the goal from a penalty
Impact of high sports confidence on participation (3)
1) More likely to take part and compete
2) You are more likely to try new activities and volunteer for roles
Impact of low sports confidence on participation (3)
1) Less likely to compete in sport
2) You are not likely to try hard or attempt sport activities
3) You are unlikely to volunteer for roles and might never realise your talent in sport
Impact of high sports confidence on self esteem
More likely to have a higher self esteem
Impact of low sports confidence on self esteem
More likely to have a lower self esteem
What is Vealeys sports confidence model
Sporting situation
SC trait Competitive orientation SC state Behavioural response -> Subjective outcome
What is SC trait
The innate level of self belief in sport
What is SC state
The self belief in a specific sporting situation and is influence by SC trait and competitive orientation
What is competitive orientation
The performers competitiveness or willingness to take on the goals of the performance
What is behavioural response
The level of state sports confidence dictates the behaviour shown in the performance
What is subjective outcome
After the performance, the individual will either feel satisfaction or disappointment, which will either increase or decreases trait confidence and competitive orientation
What are the 4 components of Banduras theory of self efficacy
1) Performance accomplishments
2) Vicarious experiences
3) Verbal persuasion
4) Emotional arousal
What are performance accomplishments
A performer can be reminded of previous success of the skill which increases confidence. If successful performances are attributed to internal or controllable attributions, this also increases confidence
What are vicarious experiences
Watching another player perform the same skill can raise confidence (especially if they are of a similar standard)
What is verbal persuasion
Positive extrinsic feedback or reinforcement can raise confidence and improve performance
What is emotional arousal
Understanding the signs of increased arousal and knowing that an increase in arousal will not lead to failure and can be controlled -> will increase confidence
What do the 4 models of Banduras theory link to
Efficacy expectations -> athletic performance
What are efficacy expectations
The expectation of the performer to achieve success / their goal
Eg. The gymnast feels that they can achieve a successful vault (following the influence of the 4 components of model)
What is athletic performance?
Now improved as self efficacy is higher
