What are attributes?
Perceived causes of a particular outcome
What are the 4 attributions to losing
1) Effort (internal/unstable)
2) Luck (external/unstable)
3) Ability (internal/stable)
4) Difficulty (external/stable)
What is learned helplessness?
A belief that failure is inevitable or a ‘why bother’ attitude -> gives the performer a feeling of hopelessness and they will never succeed
How can learned helplessness be prevented?
If performers attribute failure to external, unstable and controllable reasons such as effort
What is mastery orientation?
Term used to describe a performer who is motivated to become an expert
What is the locus of causality?
Refers to where the attributions have come from - the performer (internal) or the environment (external)
What is the controllability dimension?
Considers the extent to which the outcome is controllable or uncontrollable for the performer -> it can affect a performers motivation and expectations for the future
