What is verbal guidance? Give an example
Telling a performer how to perform a skill
E.g. = A coach telling a footballer to use the side of their foot when passing
When is verbal guidance effective? (2)
- When instructions are clear and concise
- When instructions build upon visual guidance
Advantages of verbal guidance (3)
- Good for autonomous performers
- Quick way to help improve understanding
- Can be motivational and give confidence
Disadvantages of verbal guidance (3)
- Can lead to an information overload
- Too much for a beginner
- Can be boring and confusing
What is visual guidance? Give an example
The use of a demonstration or video to aid learning
E.g. = a coach demonstrating a pass in football
When is visual guidance effective? (4)
- When demonstration is clear and can be seen
- When demonstration is correct and repeated
- When combined with verbal guidance
- If demonstration is performed by individual of high status e.g. coach / role model
Advantages of visual guidance (3)
- Develops cognitive learners mental picture
- Coach can focus on relevant cues
- Gives a better understanding of the skill
Disadvantages of visual guidance (3)
- It may be too quick for the performer to process
- Static images don’t show movement
- Demonstration could be unclear to the performer
What is manual guidance? Give an example
Physical manipulation used by a coach to aid learning
E.g. = A coach supporting a performer during swimming by holding them afloat
Advantages of manual guidance (3)
- Increases safety
- Increases confidence
- Increases kinesthesis
Disadvantages of manual guidance (2)
- Performer may become over-reliant
- False kinesthesis
What is mechanical guidance? Give an example
The use of equipment to aid learning
E.g. = A coach using a float to practice the leg kick when helping a beginner to swim
Advantages of mechanical guidance (3)
- Increases safety
- Increases confidence
- Increases kinesthesis
Disadvantages of mechanical guidance (2)
- Performer may become over-reliant
- False kinesthesis
