Memory Flashcards
What is the multi store memory model
Sensory memory STM LTM
I I I
I I I
Forgetting Forgetting Forgetting
-> attention -> rehearsal <- retrieval
What is selective attention
Focussing on relevant information and discarding irrelevant information
What is encoding and decoding?
Information is passed into the LTM through encoding and sent back to STM via decoding
Features of the sensory memory store (3)
1) Selective attention occurs here
2) Large capacity
3) Only filters information for up to 1 second
Features of the short term memory store (3)
1) Can only store 5-9 pieces of info
2) Stores it for up to 30 secs
3) Information is organised and processed
Features of the long term memory store (3)
1) Limitless capacity
2) Holds information for a long period of time
3) Meaningless information not stored in LTM -> only stores information that has meaning and rehearsed
What are the 3 stages of the levels of processing model
1) Semantic
2) Phonetic
3) Structural
What is the semantic stage of the levels of processing model
This considers the actual meaning of the information and is the deepest form of processing
What is the phonetic stage of the levels of processing model
This level is processing the way the words sound and is a deeper level of processing than structural
What is the structural stage of the levels of processing model
This is paying attention to what the words look like and is a shallow level of processing
Levels of processing model application to sport
Somersault in gymnastics. A gymnastics coach explaining why it is important to take a tuck position in a somersault to ensure greater speed of rotation
The performer is more likely to understand why they have to assume a tuck position and therefore more likely to remember it
