What is personality?
The unique make up of an individual
What is trait personality? Give an example
A theory that proposes that personality is made of attitudes and innate predispositions to act the same in all situations
E.g. = A boxer will demonstrate the trait of aggression both inside and outside of the ring
What is an introvert?
Someone who does not require external stimulation as they don’t seek social situations but prefer quieter ones. They are good at concentrating
What is an extrovert?
Someone who requires external stimulation as they seek social situations and excitement. They lack concentration
What is a stable personality?
Someone who is quite predictable and secure with their emotions and behaviours
This individual would show the same levels of calmness or competitiveness in all situations
What is an unstable personality?
Someone who is unpredictable with their emotions and behaviours
An individual could be aggressive but their levels or aggression will vary making them unpredictable/unstable
E.g. = Conor McGregor
What is Type A personality?
Type A traits include working fast, having a strong desire to succeed, likes control but also prone to suffer stress. They are highly motivated and competitive as well as being more likely to show more aggression in sport
What is Type B personality?
These traits include working slow, lacking desire to succeed, doesn’t enjoy control but not prone to suffering stress. They are more relaxed and tolerant

- Prone to high anxiety
- Prone to personal arousal
- Aggressive
- Highly competitive
Give 4 characteristics of a Type B individual
- Can control anxiety
- Not prone to personal arousal
- Non-aggressive
- Not competetive
What is the social learning theory of personality? Give a positive and negative example of this
Proposes that personality is learnt via observation
Positive = When a younger player imitates their captain and respects officials
Negative = When a younger player imitates the captain and disrespects officials
What are the 3 key factors in social learning theory of personality?
1) The environment
2) Imitation of significant other
3) Social reinforcement strengthens S-R bond
What is the interactionist theory of personality?
A combination of the trait theory and the social learning theory
It proposes that innate traits are triggered by environmental change
Give an example of the interactionist personality theory
The trait of aggression is only triggered following contact or a foul in football
