What is attitude?
A predisposition to act in a particular way towards a person or activity
Where do attitudes originate from (5)
SPERM
S = Social groups
P = Parents / past experiences
E = Education
R = Religion
M = Media
What are the 3 components of the triadic model of attitude?
1) Emotions
2) Behaviour
3) Beliefs
What are beliefs
Our beliefs are formed from what we have learned from others and our past experiences
What is behaviour?
Response to the attitude -> if the cognitive and affective responses are positively linked the behaviour will be positive
What are emotions?
How we feel about something, if we like it or not -> this is based on past experiences
What methods can be used to change attitudes? (2)
1) Cognitive dissonance
2) Persuasive communication
How can cognitive dissonance change attitude?
CAB
Cognitive - Change the beliefs e.g. running is healthy
Affect - Change the emotion e.g. running is fun
Behaviour - Change the behaviour e.g. more likely to go running
How can persuasive communication change attitude?
WHO, WHAT, WHO
Who persuades? -> A significant other / role model e.g. parent / coach
What do they communicate? -> A persuasive message
Who receives the info? -> To a recipient who must have a desire to change attitude
