strengthening fabrics and fibres Flashcards
what is reinforcing?
fabrics being strengthened by laminating them with another fibre. this can improve properties such as making them waterproof or provide the fabrics with a strong shape.
what is stiffening?
some products need areas of more shape and stiffness. this can be done by bonding interfacing onto the inside. this can add thickness or rigidity.
how is interfacing added?
by being stitched or laminated to other fabrics
what are the benefits of interfacing?
-strengthens the fabric
-stops the fabric from stretching
-interfacing in collars or cuffs helps hold their shape
what is quilting?
when two or more layers sewn together give an attractive appearance and added strength
how is gore-tex added to other fabrics?
it can be laminated to another fabric using adhesive or heat
what is thin-sulate?
a highly insulating but thin fabric
what does thin-sulate do?
the microfibres in thinsulate are fine and capture air which makes it a good insulator
what are the properties of thin-sulate?
-can be machine washed and dry cleaned
-breathable
-moisture resistant
what are the two ways of mixing fibres?
blending
mixing
what is blending?
-when fibres are mixed together at the spinning or spinneret stage- different fibres are distributed through the fabric
