what is applique?
when fabric of different shapes and colours are sewn onto a background fabric using a zigzag or straight stitch
what can you also use for applique?
interface for simple or elaborate designs
what is molar appllique?
reverse applique where the fabric is sewn underneath the background fabric- this method adds colour and texture
what is patchwork?
when small sections of different fabrics are sewn together to form a design
what are the advantages and disadvantages of patchwork?
advantages:
good way of recycling
disadvantages:
can be very time consuming
what is quilting?
sewing through layers of fabric and wadding in geometrical patterns
what three things does quilting do?
-adds texture to a product
-adds decoration to a product
-adds warmth as the trapped air in the wadding is an insulator
what does quiliting fabric consist of?
a layer of wadding sandwhiched between two layers of fabric
how can embroidery be done?
by hand or by machines powered by CAD/CAM
what are the advantages of hand embroidery?
-can be very detailed
-uses a variety of threads and stitches
what are the advantages of machine embroidery?
-quick
-uses preset stitches
-CAD/CAM designs can be built into the memory which makes ut easily repeatable
disadvantage:
-the machine is expensive
