what is hand dyeing?
when the fabrics are immersed in hot or cold water in a dye bath by hand- then the fabric is removed from the dye and rinsed to remove excess dye. then it is dried.
what are hand dyed fabrics fixed with?
mordant or a fixing agent like salt
what is the strength of dye determined on?
-amount of time in the dye bath
-absorbency of the fibres
-original fabric colour
-concentration of the dye
-effective use of mordant or fixative
before colour can be applied to a fabric what needs to happen?
the fabric needs to be cleaned to remove natural impurities and dirt and oil picked up from the machines during manufacturing. otherwise the colour will not attach itself to the fabric
what is dyeing?
the permanent application of colour to a fibre or fabric to give a uniform colour.
what is colour fastening?
the strength in which the dye is held inside the fibre
what is spin dyeing?
the dye is put into the spinning solution of synthetic fibres
what is stock dyeing ?
fibres are dyed before being spun into yarn
what is yarn dyeing?
yarns are dyed before being made into fabric
what is piece dyeing?
the dyeing of fabrics
what is garment dyeing?
made-up garments are dyed according to demand for different colours.
what is tie-dye?
fabric being folded or twisted then tied to stop dye reaching some parts of the fabric
what is batch dyeing?
fabrics are dyed to order in large batches
what is batch dyeing used for?
fabrics that have to change colour frequently because of fashion
what are the benefits of rotary screen printing?
-it’s a very fast process which is used in continious printing
