printing and dyeing techniques: Flashcards

1
Q

what is hand dyeing?

A

when the fabrics are immersed in hot or cold water in a dye bath by hand- then the fabric is removed from the dye and rinsed to remove excess dye. then it is dried.

Q

what is the strength of dye determined on?

A

-amount of time in the dye bath
-absorbency of the fibres
-original fabric colour
-concentration of the dye
-effective use of mordant or fixative

Q

before colour can be applied to a fabric what needs to happen?

A

the fabric needs to be cleaned to remove natural impurities and dirt and oil picked up from the machines during manufacturing. otherwise the colour will not attach itself to the fabric

16
Q

what is screen printing?

A

a pattern is printed onto a fabric using a stencil held in place by a screen. each screen prints one part of the design

17
Q

after applying the printing dye from screen printing what do you need to do?

A

fix the design into place using steam or dry heat

18
Q

what are the three advantages of printing?

A

-there are more opportunities for designing
-more colours can be used
-complex designs can be produced

19
Q

what are the 4 main types of fabric printing?

A

-screen printing
-roller print
-sublimation print
-digital print

20
Q

what is roller print?

A

engraved copper rollers that are full width of the fabric are coated with printing paste and rolled over the fabric

21
Q

what is sublimation print?

A

the design is printed onto a special paper and transferred to fabric using a heat press. the heat turns the dye into a vapour which is transferred to the fabric

22
Q

what fabric does sublimation print work best on?

A

polyester or other fabrics made from synthetic fibres

23
Q

what is digital print?

A

a pattern is designed on a computer then printed straight onto the fabric. the colour is fixed in the fabric using steam.

24
Q

what is digital printing only suitable for?

A

small amounts of fabric

25
Q

what things must be taken care of when screen printing?

A

-print must be the correct size and placed accurately on the product
-colour is even and not smudged
-need to be careful as the print is repeated, small mistakes can quickly become large errors along the length or width of the fabric

26
Q

what is tie dye also known as?

A

resist dyeing

27
Q

what is resist dyeing?

A

resisting the fabric by tying it off which stops the dye penetrating certain areas of the fabric to produce a pattern

28
Q

what is batik?

A

hot wax or flour paste is used to draw pattern onto a fabric before it is dyed- it can prevent dye from reaching some parts of the fabric

29
Q

what is batik also known as?

A

resist dyeing
