design ideas and sketching Flashcards
what is freehand sketching?
sketching done without the use of rulers or drawing aids
what is the advantage of freehand sketching?
ideas can be expressed quickly
what should you use when freehand sketching?
sharp pencil/a mechanical pencil- which will allow for consistent line quality
what is renderring?
addition of colour/texture to enhance a sketch to better communicate design intent
why is a mechanical pencil recommended?
-it is well balanced
-always remains sharp
-gives consistent line quality
what are blue pencils used for?
used by proffessionals so they can see construction lines and details
what is crating?
a series of faint lines which help to build the final sketch
what is concave?
a surface that curves inward
what is tone?
the deepness or brightness of a shade of colour
what does rendering help with?
to better communicate design intent
what are isometric drawings?
3D drawings
what is perspective drawing?
technique to create the linear illusion of depth. As objects get further away from the viewer they appear to decrease in size
what are isometric drawings good for?
showing measurements and how components fit together
what should you look at before designing and sketching?
-existing products
-architecture
-the work of others
-technological inspiration
what do system and schematic diagrams allow you to do?
think logically about a problem and how to solve it
what does schematic diagram use?
symbols rather than realistic images
what does annotation help with?
clarify your design intentions as sketches may not be able to show all of your ideas on paper
what three specific things does annotation help with?
describe- helps you describe the shape and form of the design
explain- helps you give explanations of materials, construction, scale and size and functionality and features
discuss- what else do you need to state that a design drawing can’t show?
what are exploded diagrams?
drawings which show the parts of a product seperated out
what can be shown in an exploded diagram?
details like construction, joining methods, strengthening methods, or iternal fittings
how do you produce an exploded diagram?
-tracing your 3D sketch, one part at a time, moving the original drawing so that the parts are not connected together
what is a scale drawing?
a drawing with accurate sizes that have been enlarged or reduced by a certain amount
what 5 things must you do when sketching?
-use best tool available
-show different aspects of the design
-keep sketches clean and accurate
-keep notes simple and precise
-spend time designing which aspects of the design could be improved
