-quick growing

-red in colour
-good resistance to rotting
-used for garden fences and patios
what are the properties of pine?
yellow in colour with contrasting darker grain
-used for interior joinery and furniture

-creamy white in colour
-lightweight
-close grain
-used for furniture and musical instruments
what are the properties of hardwoods?
-comes from deciduous trees
-lose their leaves in winter
-slower growing than softwood
-more expensive than softwood
-good resistance to decay

-oak
-beech
-mahogany
-balsa
-ash
what are the properties of oak wood?
-hard
-tough
-durable
-used for timber framed buildings and high end furniture

-hard
-strong
-does not splinter
-used for childrens toys, benches and furniture and tool handles
what are the properties of mahogany?
-deep reddish brown colour
-easy to work with
-high quality finish
-used for high quality furniture
what are the advantages of manufactured boards?
-they are available in large sheets
-have consistent properties
-less likely to twist, warp or splint
-veneer can be applied to them to give them better appearances or properties
-suited to CNC machining
-much cheaper than hardwoods or softwoods

what is plywood made from?
several layers of veneer, glued together at 90 degrees.
it is strong, but it is more expensive
