metals Flashcards
properties of ferrous metals:
-iron based
-cheap
-abundant
-magnetic
-prone to corrosion/rusting
properties of non ferrous metals:
-pure metals
-not magnetic
-rarer so more expensive
-they have more useful properties- like they’re more malleable
what are the three ferrous metals?
-low carbon steel (also known as mild steel)
-cast iron
-high carbon steel (tool steel)
what are the 4 non ferrous metals?
-alluminium
-copper
-tin
-zinc
what are the two ferrous alloys?
high speed steel
stainless steel
what is the non ferrous alloy?
brass
what are the properties of low carbon steel (mild steel)?
-strong
-cheap
-easy to weld
-rusts easily
-comes in sheet form
used in car bodies and nuts and bolts
what are the properties of high carbon (tool steel) ?
-comes in tube form
-it’s really hard even at high temperatures
-brittle
-rusts
-not easy to work with
used in drill bits, blades and screwdrivers etc
what are the properties of cast iron?
-comes in solid form- in a block
-casts easily
-hard but brittle
-may break if dropped and stretched
used in car brake disks and manhole covers
what are the properties of alluminium?
-light weight
-corrosion resistant
-malleable
-conductive of heat and electricity
-expensive
used in aircraft bodies, cans and bike frames
what are the properties of copper?
-ductile
-conductive of heat and electricity
-maleable
-expensive
used for pipe work, plumbing fittings and electrical wire
what are the properties of tin?
-corrosion resistant
-used to coat other metals
-fusible
-ductile
used in tin cans
what are the properties of zinc?
-corrosion resistant
-used to coat other metals
-not very strong on it’s own
what are the properties of high speed steel?
-very hard at high temperatures caused by friction during cutting
what are the properties of stainless steel?
-comes in a liquid form
-corrosion resistant
-tough
-strong
-ductile
used in kitchen wear
