making patterns: Flashcards
why is accuracy essential when manufacturing a product?
cutting the fabric into the required shapes with accuracy is essential to ensure a high-quality product
what must you ensure before cutting a pattern?
that the fabric is clean and free of creases
what is a pattern template used for?
to ensure that the fabric is cut into the correct size and shape for the product
what is the grainline?
a very important marking shown on the pattern template
what is a template?
a pattern shape, usually made from paper or card used to cut out fabric to the size and shape required.
how do you prepare a template?
- place the grain-line on the straight grain of the fabric otherwise the fabric will not hang correctly in the finished product
2.check this with a tape measure or ruler for accuracy
3.when folding the fabric to get a double layer, both selvedges must be placed exactly on top of each other to keep the grain correct on both layers - pattern must be pinned flat to the fabric to stop it moving as the fabric is cut to ensure accuracy
how are markings on the patterns transferred to the fabric and why are they transferred?
they are transferred to:
show how the product is to be made and indicate the position of various features (e.g buttons or pockets)
they can be transferred by:
using tailors chalk, a tracing wheel or tracing paper.
what is tacking?
temporary stitching that is used to hold fabric together until it is ready to be sewn permanently. it can also be used to test out an idea
where can patterns be found or developed?
patterns can be found in sewing magazines and on the internet
they can also be developed on a CAD program from existing products or basic blocks
what is the tolerance level?
the acceptable variation in the size a product or part of a product.
what is a commerical pattern?
ready-made pattern templates used to make textile products
what is a one way pattern?
a design on the fabric that has one direction
what must you make sure when using a pattern that you have made yourself?
make sure you have included a seam and hem allowance otherwise the product will be two small
-consider the width of the fabric
if a fabric has a one-way pattern what must you consider?
-all pattern pieces need to face the same way
if the fabric has a pattern you need to consider the patterns are matched across seams
-need to make sure the straight grain line on the pattern is placed parrallel to the fabric selvedge
