flexible manufacturing system and manufacturing systems Flashcards
what is a flexible manufacturing system?
series of machines which can be put together to make a product that can easily change or adapt rapidly to manufacture different products
what is the disadvantage of a FMS?
it can be quite expensive
what is the advantage of FMS?
The machines can:
-Restock shelves.
-Transfer and assemble parts.
-Manufacture parts.
-Check quality, improving efficiency and reducing human error
and the system can easily change or adapt rapidly to manufacture a different product easily
what is just in time manufacture?
form of lean manufacturing where materials are ordered in when they are needed
what is the advantage of just in time manufacture?
-Less storage space needed.
-Minimal waste as you only order what you need.
-Production runs can change easily to another product.
what is market pull?
design and manufacture of products to satisfy consumer demand- if a customer wants or needs something then a company will make it
based on consumer demand
what is technology pull?
when new technology influences the improvement or making of a new product (e.g touch screen phones)
not made by customer demand, however it is appealing to people as it produces innovative products
what is the difference between technology pull and market pull?
market pull is led by consumer demand but technology pull is not
what are automated production lines?
production lines using intelligent machines and robots to replace manual labour from humans
what are the advantages of automated production lines?
-products are made faster and more accurately
-fewer empolyees needed as machines replace people
-only few skilled engineers are needed to maintain machines
-improves efficiency and human error
what is efficient workflow?
workflow is organised to make the layout of a building efficient, which reduces the time spent moving from one place to another
what are the advantages of efficient workflow?
manufacturing becomes more efficient which saves time, money and waste
what is the disadvantage of JIT manufacture?
If there is a problem with the supplier, the process is delayed.
An unexpected demand could lead to delays.
what is lean manufacturing?
focusing on the reduction of waste when manufacturing
what are four factors that improve efficiency when manufacturing?
-Re-organising staff.
-Planning a production line to eliminate time travel
-getting locally sourced materials / components to reduce travel time
-Ordering the correct amounts of materials to minimise waste.
