STI Large Lecture Flashcards
2 causes of painless genital ulcer
clamydia L1-L3
primary syphilis
What is the most prevalent cause of painful genital ulcer disease?
HSV
Where does HSV establish latency?
in the dorsal root ganglia
What is the empiric treatment for HSV?
acyclovir
*can use other cylcovirs
How long do you administer clycovirs for?
7-10 days
What is the first test performed for painful genital ulcer?
suspect herpes so perform swab for HSV PCR
*HSV PCR can determine between type 1 and 2
Some overlap between chlamydia and gonorrhea
urethritis, PID, trachoma and cervicitis
LGV
ulcerative disease of genital area most commonly caused by chlamydia L1-L3
How do you test for N. gonorrhea?
NAAT testing
What type of bacteria is N. gonorrhea?
gram negative diplococci
treatment for gonorrhea
ceftriaxone
*also treat for chlamydia
treatment for chlamydia
doxycycline (preferred)
macrolides (given during pregnancy)
What is the hallmark symptom of syphilis?
maculopaplar rash on hands + feet
How long does painless ulcer take to form in syphilis?
3-4 weeks
When does neurosyphilis develop?
can develop at any point
What is the treatment for syphilis?
penicillin
Why do we not perform darkfield microscopy for syphilis?
requires biopsy
VDRL + RPR
non-treponemal tests
tells you if a disease is active
FTA-ABS
treponemal test
tells if you’ve ever been exposed to syphilis
What test is always positive once exposed to syphilis?
FTA-ABS
What should you do if someone has syphilis during pregnancy but is allergic to penicillin?
de-sensitive them
How do -cyclovirs work?
competitive inhibitors of DNA polymerase by being a nucleoside analog
Which drug is associated with thymidine kinase?
acyclovir
