Skin VHA Flashcards
Difference between thick and thin skin
Thin skin has hair follicles running through it
Thin skin has slightly thinner epidermis
What is the most abundant cell type in epidermis?
keratinocytes
What is a sign of squamous cell carcinoma?
cells with cytoplasms migrate up through the epidermis
What is the only layer of the epidermis with hemidesmosome?
stratum basale
since it rests on the basement membrane
What layer are desmosomes found in?
stratum spinosum
What happens by the time keratinocytes reach the stratum granulosum?
they are beginning process of keratinization (dying)
Which layer of skin is only found in thick skin?
stratum lucidum
In which layer are keratinocytes dead?
stratum corneum
Melanocytes
normally reside in basal layer
store pigment in organelles called melanosomes
Melanosomes
organelles that contain pigment
migrate to above the nucleus to prevent UV damage
What is the dermis made of?
dense irregular connective tissue
What makes fingerprints?
the dermis interlocking with the epidermis
Melanoma vs. squamous cell
melanoma looks more like pulling of the cytoplasm (starts in stratum basal)
squamous cell has keratin pearls
What is key feature of seborrheic keratosis?
pseudocytes
(stringy keratin whirls)
What is key feature of SCC?
keratin pearls
