Xylem and Phloem

Purpose of Xylem?
A
Carries water up ‘through’ the plant via Transpiration.
Typically consists of dead tissue and the cells are generally larger.

Purpose of Phloem?
A
The purpose is to carry sugars from the leaves to other parts of the plant via translocation.
Cells are smaller and consist of living tissue.

What’s the darker part of the stem called?
A
Heartwood.
