What are carbs, Lipids and Proteins classified as?
Macromolecules (big)
What is the basic structure of a carb?
It’s really just Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen in a 1:2:1 molar ratio.
What is the function of carbs?
Represent the body’s most important source of energy and preferred source of long term and short term energy
What are Monosaccharides?
Carbs that are relatively simple. Encompass stuff like Glucose and Fructose.
Ex: Fruits, Veggies, Honey
What are Polysaccharides?
Basically a complex carb that is made up of linked sugars.
Ex: Rice, Potatoes, Corn (any starchy food)
What are Disaccharides?
They are made up of two sugar molecules.
Ex: Sucrose & Lactose
What are the 4 ways excess sugars are stored?
Starch: (used by plants to store excess)
Glycogen: Used by animals to store excess energy in the cells
Cellulose: Plants use to form the ‘Cell wall’.
Chitin: The hard exterior insects, lobster and shrimp have.
What happens when these stores are full?
They get converted to fat….
