Protein Flashcards
What are amino acids composed of?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Sulphur
How many Amino acids do humans need?
Humans need 20 but 8 of them we cannot produce by ourselves.
Protein structure phases?
1) Primary: Amino acids bundle to form polypeptide chains
2) Secondary: When a polypeptide chain grows beyond 30 amino acids, it begins to fold upon itself
3) Tertiary: Goes 3D like the SNES -> N64
4) Quaternary: Two or more of these structures bundle to form functional protein.
Structure always matches function?
the ultimate shape of the protein will determine its function in the cell/organism
What conditions denature a protein?
Heat, pH change, Radiation and Harsh chemicals (salt)
What are enzymes?
Enzymes are protein molecules that are designed to aid in the chemical reactions of the body.
Enzymes work by lowering the activation energy required for a reaction to proceed.
What can enzymes do (2 things)
Thing can either be Catabolic (break down) or Anabolic (build up).
