Plantae Flashcards
Is Algae and/or Seaweed part of kingdom Plantae or Protista?
They are part of Protista.
Whats Phylum Phaeophyta?
Phaeophyta (brown seaweed), is one of the most common seaweeds. some can group to 60m long making them the longest in the protists.
What’s Phylum Rhodophyta?
Rhodophyta (Red Algae) is speculated as being the first multicellular organisms on earth.
They are usually found in deep, warm waters.
They have chlorophyll and phycoertythrin.
What’s Phylum Chlorophyta?
Chlorophyta (Green Algae), is aquatic but could be found on land
[The phylum includes both single, colonial, and multicellular organisms; some have flagella.]
They are the most plant-like similar protists due to them having similar cell structures.
What are some main characteristics of all Plants?
They are Multicellular, Eukaryotic, organisms which are Autotrophs (photosynthesis). They are the base of the food web.
What does the Plantae kingdom separate into?
1) Non-vascular (Bryophytes)
2) Seedless Vascular (Tracheophytes)
3) Seed producing Vascular (conifers like Pine) (Gymnosperms)
4) Seed producing Vascular (flowering plants) (Angiosperms)
Traits for Non-vasculars?
(Bryophytes)
Simplest land plants.
They are like fungi in the sense they reproduce using spores.
They do NOT have vascular tissue.
They are mosses.
Traits of seedless vascular plants?
(Tracheophytes)
They have vascular tissue, allows to vertically grow (Xylem + Phloem).
Reproduction via spores.
AKA Ferns.
Traits for seed producing vasculars?
(Gymnosperms)
Cone bearing plants (reproductive structure which produce either pollen or ovules for female).
Seeds ain’t protected/enclosed in ovary.
Basically think of Pine/Cedar.
Traits for seed producing vasculars (angiosperms)?
(Angiosperms)
Reproductive organisms are IN the flower.
Seeds and stuff are protected in the ovaries of the flower.
90% of all plants are Angiosperms.
