Convergent/Divergent Evolution Flashcards
In detail :)
What’s Selective Pressure(s)?
It is when the traits of certain species evolve to the pressure that the environment may be placing on them.
Survival of the fittest
Reproductive Success?
Organisms with greater reproductive success will stay in existence. That simple.
What’s Divergent evolution?
“The accumulation of differences between groups, leading to the formation of new species”
Occurs when two groups within the same species develop differing traits to adapt to differing environments.
Homologous structures: These structures evolved to overcome different selective pressures in different environments. Thus, these come from DIVERGENT evolution.
Example of Divergent Evolution?
Darwin’s Finches.
What’s Convergent Evolution?
A process by which species, not closely related to one another, independently develop similar traits to adapt to similar environments.
Analogous structures: These result from two species adapting to similar environmental pressures. Thus, these come from CONVERGENT evolution.
Example of Convergent Evolution?
The flying squirrels.
What is Speciation?
The formation of a new and distinct species through the process of evolution.
What’s Allopatric Speciation?
When members of a species are isolated from one another, and evolve independently as a result
Think of them finches.
Sympatric Speciation?
Sympatric Speciation occurs when new species evolve from a common ancestor, while occupying the same geographic region
Think H. Sapiens and Neanderthals
