Natural Selection Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 7 theories of evolution by Natural Selection?
A
- Individuals within a species vary in many ways.
- Some of this variability can be inherited.
- Every generation produces far more offspring than can survive and pass on this variability.
- Populations of a species tend to remain stable (numbers).
- Members of the same species compete with each other for survival. (For what? List examples)
6) Individuals with more favourable variations are more likely to survive and pass these traits on. Survival is not random.
- With succeeding generations these favourable variations will become more common in the population.

Q
What is Natural Selection?
A
It is the way in which the environment favours the reproductive success of certain individuals over others.
It is the driving horse behind evolution.
Selective Pressures are environmental factors that select against the least fit, or select for the most fit individuals

Q
What is Artificial Selection?
A
It’s when selection occurs under captivity as opposed to Natural circumstances. It’s when humans select certain species to breed/cross-breed be it for better traits.
