Cell Types (Prokaryotic v. Eukaryotic) Flashcards
part of the diversity unit.
What are the 2 types of cells?
Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic.
What is the different between the two?
Eukaryotics have a true nucleus surrounded with a cellular membrane (think of human & plant cells), while Prokaryotics do not have a membrane surrounding it’s chromosomes (like bacteria).
What are some more specific differences between the two?
Eukaryotes have numerous chromosomes and DNA while Prokaryotes usually have 1. Prokaryotes have very few simple organelles while Eukaryotes have a lot more complex organelles.
How do prokaryotics reproduce?
They reproduce asexually via binary fission. They do not need a mate, but they just need food and favourable conditions.
What is conjugation?
Conjugation is where a donor and recipient cells make cell to cell contact by sex pilus. Plasmids (genetic iinformation) are exchanged which result in altered characteristics. Bacteria can adapt to certain things (antibiotics) in order to develop resistance.
