Lipids Flashcards
Can lipids mix with water?
No.
What are the 3 categories lipids are split in?
Fats, Oils, Waxes
Phospholipids
Steroids
What are the functions of Lipids?
Long term energy storage
very concentrated
twice the energy of carbohydrates!
Cell membrane formation
Insulation and
Cushions organs
Think whale blubber!
Make up hormones
Testosterone/estrogen
Whats the structure of a lipid?
Made up of 2 structural units which a are glycerol molecule and 3 fatty acids.
This big molecule is called a triglyceride
What are triglycerides made up of?
Triglycerides are made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms.
Liquid fats are called oils
What are some characteristics for Saturated fats?
Linear
Tightly packed
Solid at room temp
No double bonds (full saturation)
From Animals
Difficult to break down
Ex: Butter, Lard
Characteristics of Unsaturated fats?
Bent Molecule
Cannot tightly pack
Liquid at room temp
One or more double bonds
Plant based
Easily broken down
Ex: Vegetable oils, Olive oil
What’s Cholesterol?
It’s a good molecule in cell membranes.
The bad ones cause heart disease (LDL)
Good ones can help (HDL)
What are cell membranes made of?
Typically phospholipids. Heads are outside touching the water.
Tails are away from water (Phobic)
Forms a barrier.
Hand Sanitizer can break through those cell membranes.
