Q

What are plant like protists?

A

These type of protists are plant-like because they contain chlorophyll (photosynthesis) and because of this, they are Autotrophic (in darkness they become heterotrophs by engulfing solid foods).

Q

What are characteristics of the Euglena?

A

Eyespot (light detection), Flagellum (movement), Vaculoles (collect/remove excess water), No cell wall, Food stored as starch and asexual reproduction (Longitudinal fission).

Q

What are animal-like protists?

A

They are protozoans. They are animal-like because they are heterotrophs (engulfment of food). They are also Eukaryotes.

Depending on how they move, they are classified as: Flagellates, Sporozoans, Sarcodines or Ciliates.

Q

What are Flagellates?

A

They are protists that move via the whipping motion of the Flagella.

Trypanosome (sleeping sickness. transmitted by fly).

Q

What are Sporozoans?

A

Sporozoans are Protists that cannot move on their own (have no pseudopods, cilia, or flagella).

Parasites:
Invade other organisms and move in their blood/body fluids

Q

What are Sarcodines?

A

Sarcodines are protists that move via psuedopods (false feet). Cytoplasm of pseudopod is extended and the flowing action allows them to move.

Q

Example of a Sarcodine?

A

Amoeba. They are the largest protozoan but the least complex. They reproduce via binary fission. They eat via phagocytosis.

Q

What are Ciliates?

A

Ciliates move using cilia (hair like structures outside the cell). It also captured food.

Q

Example of a Ciliate?

A

Paramecium (one of the most complex protozoans). Some features include: Cilia, Pellicle, Contractilre Vacuole, Oral Groove, Gullet, Anal pore, 2 nuclei and poison filled barbs).

Fungi-like Protists?

A

Slime molds: Hetertrophs, most are decomposes. They live in cool damp habitats and they are also water molds.
