Steam Generator Blowdown Flashcards

0
Q

What is the purpose of S/G blowdown?

A

Compensate for the impurity concentration effect on the S/Gs by continuous blowdown and processing of a portion of the fluid from each steam generator.

Also maintains S/Gs in wet layup by allowing for adequate mixing, sampling, and chem add.

7
Q

How is the liquid in the BFT processed for reuse?

A

It goes through the blowdown HX, a filter, demins, and then discharges to the condenser hotwell.

9
Q

How is BFT pressure maintained?

A

By a pressure control valve that discharges to heater drain tank or the main condenser.

Q

Where do the blowdown demin low TDS sump and high TDS sump get pumped to?

A

Low TDS can go to circ water canal if no rad. If activity present then pumps to the LRS sump. Could also go to CWNT
High TDS sump pumps to the CWNT.

13
Q

How is blowdown controlled?

A

From the control room.

3 position switch to select BFT, Cond, or off and a rate selector switch for normal, abnormal, or high rates.

15
Q

How is BFT level maintained in the demin/reten lv position? In byp demin mode?

A

Demin outlet valve (3b) modulates OR 3C is lined up and flow is going to the retention pond. 3A is closed.

Byp demin mode 3a modulates with flow going to the 3a,b,c fw heaters.

16
Q

How do the BFT pressure regulating valves fail on a loss of IA?

A

Open to keep pressure < 200psig

17
Q

What happens if a high demin inlet temperature is detected when the demin outlet valve is controlling BFT level?

A

The demin outlet valve will close and the control room has to take the switch to byp demin mode. 3a will modulate to control level.

18
Q

What happens if high sodium is detected in one of the blowdown demin vessels?

A

If both are in service in AUTO STOP then the vessel is removed from service. If only 1 is in service, then the vessel goes to a 30 minute auto rinse.

19
Q

What happens if blowdown demin vessel D/P gets to 26 psi?

A

If in auto stop, then the vessel will remove from service for regen.

If in manual, it should be removed from service.

20
Q

What is blowdown HX outlet temp controlled to?

A

135F

21
Q

When is the high blowdown rate used?

A

Weekly to remove accumulated solids from the tube sheet area

22
Q

What is the flow path for wet layup recirc?

A

From s/g through blowdown lines, sometimes through blowdown demins if cleanup is needed, and back to the s/g through down comer lines.

23
Q

How can the wet layup pumps be aligned?

A

Both pumps can be placed in service at the same time, but only if A is lined up to #1 s/g and B is lined up to #2 s/g.
A or B can be lined up to the opposite steam generator, but the other pump can’t be run in that configuration.

24
Q

What is the disadvantage of down comer blowdown?

A

It has no cleaning effect on the tube sheet sludge pile

25
Q

Why are the blowdown sight glasses valves in slowly?

A

To allow it to heat up slowly and not break the sight glass

26
Q

What is special about the instrument valves that isolate the gage glasses?

A

They are equipped with excessive flow ball check valves that will isolate flow should the sight glass break.
